Let’s face it. Reading is one of the most important things we can teach our children. It isn’t always “fun” for kids to sit down and learn to read. Reading is hard for them. Can you imagine what it must be like to not know any words and have to remember how all of the letters sound together, even though some don’t sound like what they look like they should sound like. English is hard. We as parents NEED to make sure that we foster a love for reading in children when they’re very little. The younger the better.
How do you instill a love for reading in your child?
- Choose engaging books.
- Make sure you read every day.
- Show them YOUR love for reading.
- Make reading fun.
- Involve your children in the reading process as much as you can.
Choose engaging books.
There are books for children that don’t engage. Books that don’t have pictures or rhyming words. You want to make sure you find books that are specifically designed to engage young readers. Usborne books offers an amazing variety of books for children of all ages that have been designed and written in a way to hold children’s attention and make their minds work.
I remember when my youngest son, who is 2 years old, first became interested in books he wasn’t really excited about them and he wouldn’t pay attention to them for long. I took him to a street fair and we looked at a vendor’s table that was full of Usborne books. My son found a book about Tractors and he didn’t want to leave the tent. He sat right down with it and started to look at all the pages. He begged me to buy him one. So I bought a book for each of my three kids. The next day I signed up to be a consultant because I couldn’t believe how excited my kids were over their books.
Make sure you read every day.
Children learn by repetition. There are plenty of distractions from learning with technology so easily accessible today. Many people forget about the importance of reading to and with their children. Take even 10 or 15 minutes out of your day and sit down for some quiet reading time.
Show them YOUR love for reading.
Don’t MOST children look up to their parents to show them how to do everything. How else do they learn? Other adults like teachers. If you show them that you love reading by spending some time each day reading something, chances are they will pick up that habit as well.
Make reading fun.
Reading at the soccer fields.
There are TONS of ways you can do this. Read in a funny voice. Ask your child to think up another ending to the story. Create a craft that goes along with the story. Read outside. Take a trip to the library. If you associate reading with fun, it will be less painstaking of a process to learn.
Do NOT get frustrated. If you’re feeling frustrated, so will they. And it WILL make them hesitate. It will develop negative feelings towards reading. It could damage their whole outlook on reading in the future.
Involve your children in the reading process as much as you can.
Don’t just read them the story and be done with it. Include them in the story as you read. Ask them questions to further their thinking. Discuss any illustrations. If your child is old enough to read some words, have them read sentences that they may be able to recognize.
It is never too early to start developing a young reader. Children are very intelligent and learn very fast and well. So take some time today to help your child learn and grow. What are YOUR favorite books to read to your child?
